About album

GleAM Records is proud to announce the release of Live at Parma Jazz Frontiere, the new album by the BSDE 4tet, available in CD and digital download/streaming format from December 13th, 2024 and distributed by IRD International and Believe Digital. The release will be preceded by the single Nord Scream 2, South Screams Too (December 6th, 2024).

“BSDE 4tet recorded their first album, Elevating Jazz Music Vol. 1, in 2021. The music, composed entirely by saxophonist Daniele Nasi, was published in January 2022 as one of the inaugural releases in the GleAM Records catalogue. After receiving positive acclaim from Italian critics and being rated among the best albums of 2022 in music magazines, the group went through a brief hiatus and a lineup change, with drummer Andrea Bruzzone being replaced by Mattia Galeotti. During this period, Daniele Nasi was awarded the Giorgio Gaslini International Prize in its ninth edition. The jury, composed of Franco D’Andrea, Roberto Bonati, and Bruno Tommaso, highlighted his solo skills and personal compositional style. Since then, the BSDE 4tet has embarked on a new season, performing a series of concerts between fall 2023 and winter 2024 in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland. One significant performance from this tour, to which Musica Jazz dedicated an article in December 2023, was recorded on October 14, 2023, at the Casa della Musica in Parma as part of the 28th Edition of the Parma Jazz Frontiere Festival. The concert’s uniqueness lies in the alchemy between the musicians, the warmth of the audience, and the specific acoustics of the venue. It serves as an excellent live testimony of the music from their first album, complemented by a couple of new compositions. For this performance, Daniele Nasi, Jung Taek Hwang, Giacomo Marzi, and Mattia Galeotti, following a suggestion from festival artistic director Roberto Bonati, collaborated with artist Alberto Reggianini, whose action painting both inspired and was inspired by their music. In the album, you can even hear the swish of brushes on the canvas merging with the music.”

FULL ALBUM

Reviews:

"This is GleAM's first live recording and maintains its high-quality recording characteristics, capturing every nuance of Nasi's expressive saxophone work. Across six tracks spanning 70 minutes, the quartet develops themes inviting deeper reflection on pressing social issues. The ensemble's chemistry shines through, Marzi's sinuous bass lines and Galeotti's responsive drumming match well with Hwang's elegant piano work. Nasi's compositions skillfully blend contemporary jazz vocabulary with subtle Middle Eastern and Balkan folk influences. The quartet's artistic vision remains clear, demonstrating their ability to transform social consciousness into compelling musical dialogue."

- Neil Duggan - All About Jazz (USA)

"Much of the music, composed of Nasi originals, has been inspired by the plight of migrants in general, the situation in Palestine and the tragedy that is the current Ukrainian conflict. But as with all such projects driven by events, the question is whether the end product stands up to scrutiny. In this case it certainly does. A number of these tunes appeared on that first album, the opening Drowning In Guilt being a case in point, kicking off in conventional uptempo mode, featuring Nasi on tenor, with pianist Hwang setting out her stall. This comfortable normality gives way to a ruminative middle section, interrupted by an unexpected telephone conversation, eventually giving way to a turbulent free-ish passage before a return to the norm. The circular breathing we experience via the tenor on Callin’ is impressive, as is the Tyner-inclined intensity from the keyboard. When switching to soprano, the leader is essentially a lyrical player, which we experience on Oddly Enough and Waltz For Palestine, although this does not negate his ability to raise the temperature. The final track, Nord Scream 2, South Screams Too, opens in a subdued manner broken by tumbling aggressive urgings from all and sundry, taken out by a portentous toll."

- Guido Festinese - AudioReview (Italia)

Ascolto consigliatissimo! "

- Pietro Cozzi - Mescalina (Italia)

- Francesco Cataldo Verrina - DoppioJazz Magazine (Italia)
