Dexter Gordon new album on JazzLife Magazine – Review by Kazune Hayata
“Emerging in the mid-1940s, Dexter Gordon became a jazz legend celebrated for his bold yet melodious phrasing, which gained him wide popularity and exerted a major influence on later giants such as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane.
A live album featuring entirely unreleased recordings by Gordon has now been issued as the first release in GleAM Records’ JAZZ HISTORY series.
The time and place: an Italian jazz festival in July 1981. The lineup features his working band of that period, including Kirk Lightsey, who had been Gordon’s right-hand man since the mid-1970s.
The performance is thoroughly swinging and powerful from start to finish. The continuation of this series is certainly something to look forward to.”
