Rough Line è il terzo album da leader di Angelo Mastronardi. Uscito in formato digitale già nel 2019, lo scorso anno è stato pubblicato anche in CD Rough Line, il terzo album da solista di Angelo Mastronardi. Il pianista pugliese, fondatore anche dell’etichetta che ha pubblicato l’album, la GleAM, è accompagnato da Rogers Anning al contrabbasso e Carmelo Miceli alla batteria. Il disco propone otto brani: sei originali e nuove versioni degli intramontabili classici “All The Things You Are” e “Oleo”. L’album è aperto da “All In My Hands”: la ritmica dal sapore jazz rock sostiene il (bel) tema eseguito dal synth, efficace e ingegnoso. I suoni sono molto belli e curati e fanno esplodere il brano durante il virtuosistico assolo di pianoforte. “Follow Me” è caratterizzata da un bel groove e dimostra l’ottimo interplay dei tre musicisti: Mastronardi esegue linee veloci e articolate, la ritmica sostiene con leggerezza ma impeccabilmente: senza dubbio è un brano che si “segue” volentieri! Un mood moderato, più ispirato al gospel e al soul è quello di “Everything I Need”, con il basso (il suono ricorda Pastorius) che esegue il tema. Intrigante la versione di “All The Things You Are”, rivista per sola tastiera, un brano che ancora rimanda ai mondi della fusion nelle sonorità e qui interpretato con grande originalità. Sonorità invece che tendono al Nu Soul sono quelle di “Away From The Scene”, che vede in primo piano la batteria, costantemente alle prese con ambiguità ritmiche (esplicitate e non). “Oleo” è interpretata con il gusto dell’hard-bop funambolico degli anni 50: particolarmente ben riuscito l’assolo di Mastronardi, vero virtuoso del pianoforte, che stupisce con idee sempre nuove e diverse. La segue “7 H-Ours”, che è forse il brano più affascinante della raccolta: la sola tastiera esplora mondi affascinanti e personali. Rough Line è un disco eclettico che mette in mostra le diverse anime di Mastronardi: lo swing, il jazz rock, l’amore per il virtuosismo ma anche allo stesso tempo per la semplicità, il gusto per la sperimentazione e l’originalità molto ben combinati con la conoscenza della tradizione.

Rough Line is Angelo Mastronardi’s third record as leader. The pianist from Puglia, also founder of the label that released the album, GleAM, is accompanied by Rogers Anning on double bass and Carmelo Miceli on drums. The record features eight tracks: six originals and new versions of the timeless classics “All The Things You Are” and “Oleo”. The album opens with “All In My Hands”. The rhythm, with a jazz rock flavor, supports the beautiful theme performed by the synth, effective and ingenious. The sounds are beautiful and the track explodes during the virtuoso piano solo. “Follow Me” is characterized by a nice groove and demonstrates the excellent interplay of the three musicians: Mastronardi plays fast and articulate lines, the rhythm supports lightly but flawlessly. Without a doubt it is a song that you will “follow” willingly! A moderate mood, more inspired by gospel and soul is that of “Everything I Need”, with the bass (the sound is reminiscent of Pastorius) playing the theme. An intriguing version of “All The Things You Are”, revised for keyboard only, follows. It is a song that again refers to the world of 70’s fusion and interpreted with great originality. Sounds of Nu Soul are those of “Away From The Scene”, which features the drums in the foreground, constantly struggling with rhythmic ambiguities (explicit and not). “Oleo” is interpreted with the taste of the acrobatic hard-bop of the 50s: particularly successful is the solo by Mastronardi, a true virtuoso of the piano, who amazes with ever new and different idea. The following is “7-Our” is perhaps the most fascinating track of the collection: the keyboard alone explores fascinating and personal worlds. Rough Line is an eclectic record that showcases the different souls of Mastronardi: swing, jazz rock, love for virtuosity but also at the same time for simplicity, taste for experimentation and originality very well combined with the knowledge of tradition.

Rough Line es el tercer álbum de Angelo Mastronardi como líder. Lanzado en formato físico ya en 2019, Rough Line, el tercer álbum en solitario de Angelo Mastronardi, el año pasado fue reeditado en todas las plataformas digitales. El pianista de Apulia, también fundador de GleAM, la etiqueta que lanzó el álbum, está acompañado por Rogers Anning al contrabajo y Carmelo Miceli a la batería. El disco incluye ocho pistas: seis originales y nuevas versiones de los clásicos atemporales “All The Things You Are” y “Oleo”. El álbum se abre con “All In My Hands”: la rítmica con sabor a jazz rock apoya el (hermoso) tema interpretado por el sintetizador, eficaz e ingenioso. Los sonidos son muy bonitos y cuidados y hacen que la pieza explote durante el virtuoso solo de piano. “Follow Me” se caracteriza por un groove agradable y demuestra la excelente interacción entre los tres músicos: Mastronardi toca líneas rápidas y articuladas, el ritmo se apoya de manera ligera pero impecable: sin duda es una composición que “sigues” de buena gana! Un mood moderado, más inspirado por el gospel y el soul es el de “Everything I Need”, con el bajo (el sonido recuerda a Pastorius) tocando el tema. Intrigante la versión de “All The Things You Are”, revisada para teclado solo, una canción que todavía hace referencia a los mundos de la fusion en los sonidos y aquí interpretada con gran originalidad. Sonoridades que tienden al Nu Soul son las de “Away From The Scene”, que ve la batería como protagonista, luchando constantemente con ambigüedades rítmicas (explícitas y no). “Oleo” se interpreta con el gusto del hard-bop de funambulista de los años 50: particularmente exitoso es el solo de Mastronardi, un verdadero virtuoso del piano, que nos asombra con ideas siempre nuevas y diferentes. “7-Our” es quizás la composición más fascinante de la colección: el teclado solo explora mundos fascinantes y personales. Rough Line es un disco ecléctico que destaca las diferentes almas de Mastronardi: swing, jazz rock, amor por el virtuosismo pero también al mismo tiempo por la sencillez, gusto por la experimentación y originalidad muy bien combinadas con el conocimiento de la tradición.
